Responsibility of the EMS Student

  1. The EMS student should strictly carry out the orders of the preceptors under whom he/she is working with.
  2. The EMS student should never discuss or criticize a preceptor. If the student has questions regarding the orders given during a call, the student must wait until the completion of the call to discuss their question with the preceptor. ONLY interject if the procedure is a life-threatening procedure.
  3. The EMS student should always give the preceptors the proper amount of respect and consideration.
  4. The EMS student should always be conscious of the tremendous responsibility of his/her chosen profession.
  5. The EMS student should treat every patient or bystander with respect, attentiveness, and professionalism.
  6. The EMS student should be aware of the obligation of confidentiality. The obligation of confidentiality goes beyond the period of technical services. Nothing observed during a clinical or field rotation should be divulged by the EMS student, unless in extreme situations. The same confidentiality applies to the patient’s condition/diagnosis. The patient’s condition should not be discussed with anyone other than those directly involved with the patient subsequent care and have the “Right-to-Know.”
  7. The EMS student should recognize and appreciate the contributions of other Allied Health Professionals.
  8. The EMS student should be tolerant of the weaknesses of others.
  9. The EMS student should not participate in gossip or adverse criticism of others.
  10. The EMS student will practice professional behavior according to the accepted professional practice.
  11. The EMS student should support and participate in their professional organization.
  12. The EMS student should promote the profession of Emergency Medical Services, whenever possible.
