Dress Code and Hygiene Guidelines

  1. Dress code.

Male students: Male students are required have at least one black, navy, or charcoal gray suit consisting of coat and trousers (or optional long skirt for women). The suit must fit comfortably and not be tight to the body. The trousers must be worn to ensure the fit is not form revealing, allows for squatting to pick up heavy objects, and does not reveal any skin with movements. A white shirt is also required, and men are to have a corresponding-colored tie. Dress shoes should be black or cordovan colored and polished.

Female Students: Female students are required have at least one black, navy, or charcoal gray suit consisting of coat and trousers, or an optional long skirt. The suit must fit comfortably and not be tight to the body. The trousers must be worn to ensure the fit is not form revealing, allows for squatting to pick up heavy objects, and does not reveal any skin with movements. If a female student chooses a long skirt, the fit should be the same as the description for trousers. Female students should have a white shirt or blouse. Shoes must be flats or low heels (able to walk in grass without sinking) and polished.

All Students: All students are required to wear professional business attire to all Practicum/Clinical days in funeral homes. Suits and/or dresses must be clean, and shirts must be pressed and fresh. Practicum/Clinical sites may have additional color requirements for professional attire, and students should be in compliance.

Tattoos must be covered while at Practicum/Clinical, and piercings must be taken out except for single stud earrings.

In specified courses and on specified dates, students must wear professional business attire to class. Business Casual dress is acceptable in funeral service and general education courses.

At no time are students permitted to wear tattered, dirty, malodorous or risqué clothing. Female students are not permitted to wear short shorts, miniskirts, or tops showing bare skin. Male students must wear their pants with a belt and pulled up to the waist.

  2. Hygiene. Students are expected to bathe, wash their hair, and brush their teeth before attending courses and internships. Attention must be given to keep your hands and fingernails clean. Fingernails must be cut short, with minimal adornment. Students must be aware of unpleasant breath and take measures to correct condition with mints or dental treatment.
