Tetanus Vaccination Guidance

Tetanus is a serious, sometimes fatal disease of the central nervous system. It is caused by the toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. Veterinary professionals often deal with livestock and other species in which this organism regularly causes disease. Because this bacterium can enter the body through a wound or from a contaminated object (i.e., a needle puncture), immunization against Tetanus is a recommendation for all healthcare workers.

The DTaP vaccine is a combination vaccine that protects against 3 diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis. The CDC recommends that children receive five DTaP shots as part of childhood immunization. Booster vaccinations are recommended at or around 5 and 12 years of age. Adults should receive a Td booster every 10 years. Please contact your healthcare provider for advice on this vaccination.
