History of the Program and the Jackie Howard Award

The Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program at Ogeechee Technical College represents the fulfillment of a long-standing vision to provide high-quality nursing education right here in our community. Officially launched in January 2024, the program was made possible by a transformative $1.5 million endowment from the George W. Strickland Jr. Foundation. This generous support marked the largest single gift in the college’s history and helped welcome the program’s inaugural class of 24 students.

The creation of the ASN program was championed by Jackie Howard, whose determination and leadership played a pivotal role in bringing the vision to life. Driven by a deep belief in the potential of OTC students and the needs of our local healthcare system, Howard worked tirelessly alongside college leadership to turn an ambitious idea into a reality. Her commitment to nursing education and student success continues to shape the program’s identity and values.

In recognition of her instrumental role and enduring impact, the Jackie Howard Award was established to honor a graduating ASN student who embodies the core values of the program: leadership, compassion, resilience, and a true heart for nursing. Each year, one graduate will be selected to receive this prestigious award, which includes full coverage of their NCLEX registration and testing fees, generously provided by Jackie Howard.

This award serves not only as a tribute to her legacy but also as an inspiration for future nurses to uphold the spirit of excellence and dedication that defines the ASN program at Ogeechee Tech.
