Gift and Personal Item Exchanges with Patients

Prohibition of Gift and Personal Item Exchanges with Patients

To maintain professional boundaries and uphold ethical nursing practice, nursing students shall not give, loan, donate, purchase, or provide money, gifts, personal items, food, clothing, cards, or any other material goods to patients, residents, clients, or their family members during any clinical, laboratory, simulation, practicum, preceptorship, or community-based learning experience.

Students are prohibited from using personal funds or resources to obtain items or services for patients, residents, clients, or their family members. If a patient expresses a need for assistance, students should notify the assigned nurse, clinical instructor, or appropriate facility representative so that available institutional or community resources may be utilized.

Likewise, students shall not solicit, request, or accept money, gifts, favors, services, or personal items from patients, residents, clients, or their family members.

The development of personal, financial, social, or other non-therapeutic relationships with patients, residents, clients, or their family members is prohibited and may constitute a violation of professional boundaries.

Failure to Comply

Violation of this policy is considered unprofessional conduct and may result in disciplinary action, up to and including a clinical warning, clinical probation, removal from the clinical setting, course failure, program dismissal, or other sanctions as outlined in the ASN Student Handbook. The level of disciplinary action will be determined based on the nature and severity of the violation.
