Veterinary Technician Code of Ethics and Ideals
The OTC Veterinary Technology Program adheres to the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) Code of Ethics and Ideals. The Code of Ethics provides guidance to the veterinary technician for carrying out responsibilities to meet this profession's ethical obligations.
Code of Ethics
Veterinary technicians shall:
- aid society and animals through providing excellent care and services for animals.
- prevent and relieve the suffering of animals.
- promote public health by assisting with the control of zoonotic diseases and informing the public about these diseases.
- assume accountability for individual professional actions and judgments.
- protect confidential information provided by clients.
- safeguard the public and the professional against individuals deficient in professional competence or ethics.
- help ensure employment conditions consistent with the excellent care for animals.
- remain competent in veterinary technology through commitment to life-long learning.
- collaborate with members of the veterinary medical profession to ensure quality health care services for all animals.
Ideals
Veterinary technicians shall:
- strive to participate in defining, upholding, and improving standards of professional practice, legislation, and education.
- strive to contribute to the profession’s body of knowledge.
- strive to understand and support the attachment between a person and his/her companion animal.
